Warsaw (Poland Bros.)
Collected Works |
 |
Note: this isn't a review of one particular
CD, but instead of ALL of Warsaw's work. The band should be evaluated
as a whole, perhaps not even by individual albums, but as the entire body
of work that is Warsaw.
Fortunately my introduction to this band was through probably
their best album to date, 'Hors G'lore'. The play on words is especially
effective because of the fact that the album was a great hors d'oeuvre
for the meal of rock, ska, reggae, hiphop, country, and punk that Warsaw
Poland Brothers set their table with.
What I had heard about the guys who make up warsaw--the all-night skateboarding,
the copious amounts of crank and Jagermeister (by whom they are sponsored)-sounded
like a recipe for shitty music and an early death. While these guys might
indeed die young, their music is far from shitty. It seems that whatever
aspect of JA music they become interested in completely consumes their
creative abilities. When they said "Let's make a ska album"
and Battle Ska Galactica came out, you better believe it was some of the
most right-on-target ska (in all its forms) coming out of the nineties.
Same goes for the Dub Confrontation album (with stucky). Straight up reggae
dub, from the heart and rippin' through your central nervous system. The
release previous to Dub Confrontation, 'Pimpin' on Crutches' is also great
for what it is. Another reviewer called it a "departure". To
me this just says he didn't listen to Warsaw's other music. Every
album is a departure- but from the average, not from their own sound.
P.O.C. could by typified as rock/rap/latin/punk /hip-hop/country, and
that would only hit most of the marks.
In short, if you haven't heard Warsaw,
you're missing out. They've asked me to put all of their music online,
and you can find it on KaZaA, where I'm Urmahm666. |
