Micah: Yeah DJ: So, what's that drumming called? One-drop? Micah: No, for reggae it's one-drop. For ska it's 2-4 drop. Those are your two basic beats. And I've talked to a lot of people who are like "that's boring, that's a boring rhythm". But, once you get the rhythm, it's kind of real backwards to western music . It took me a while, I come from like a rock background pretty much. So, trying to switch tracks, everything I had learned as a drummer I had to pretty much throw out the window to learn ska. It's a funky rhythm. But once you get it, it's structured almost a lot like jazz, where you just get to improvise a lot and play to the rhythm. But, everybody's doing a little bit of everything, and I don't know, it's a really cool thing. Micah: But people consider it the end-all be-all of ska. When people think of ska they think of punk-ska, and they don't even know, dont' realize that ska is an old jamaican thing. Like, reggae was formed out of ska; right? Ska wasn't formed out of reggae. AJ: Yeah, you've heard that Upbeat sample right? "Just a modern-day offshoot of reggae". Micah: Yeah AJ: So, what's that drumming called? One-drop? Micah: No, for reggae it's one-drop. AJ:It seems like it's finally on a slow uphill, rather than a downhill. I mean, Ska definitely reached a point where it was the kiss of death in the industry and everything. Hepcat broke up, but the Slackers are holding it up high; and there seems to be a very slow, gradual underground building again. We can only hope that traditional will come back at some point and we're just going to keep on doing what we do.
AJ: I'll help you guys any way I can, I mean... Chuck:The best way to help out is to just dance. Come out to the shows and have a good time. Curt: And, let's not forget the strawberry Boone's... AJ: Haha! This is actually Go Jimmy Go's Boone's... Curt: (Loud moan of disapproval) Stealin'
the Hawaiian Boone's...
